They are dramatically different constructs.
“There is a difference between education & schooling.
Education isn’t cram studying to memorize random facts & theories to gain points on an arbitrary test. That’s schooling.
Education is learning to think critically.
It’s learning to understand & solve real world problems.”
-Ray Zingler on X
“Schooling will make you a living, but (self) education will make you a fortune.” -Steve Siebold
I hated school growing up.
I enjoyed the social aspects and sports side of it, but being shoved in a chair for 7 hours a day to “learn” about a bunch of shit I didn’t care about for 12 years wasn’t my thing.
I fared relatively well because I had to, a 3.0 gpa or whatever, but the whole time I was in school, I was constantly wondering what the point was, especially knowing the 1 of 2 fields I wanted to get into, the military or entrepreneurship.
I thought I hated education.
But it was the exact opposite.
I hated schooling.
When it came to “educating” myself about the military, strength & conditioning, college football statistics, & etc. I literally spent a diabolical amount of hours reading, studying researching, assessing data, trial and erring.
And this “self education” (I didn’t know it was called that at the time) fueled my soul.
I quite literally couldn’t get enough education.
And my desire to be educated grew exponentially once I got out of school.
It was like a 100-pound weight was lifted off my chest and now I could spend even more time on what has grown to be my greatest hobby – education.
I read, study, and write every single day.
That “dumb meathead” without a college degree is a published author.
The point isn’t to be an asshole in school, the system is broken, obviously,(pay attention to the last time the school system evolved – we were using carrier pigeons for distanced communication) but the system is the system and if you or your kid is in it, you should do your best.
But it is critically important to not let schooling get in the way of education, especially in the ever-evolving world that ONLY cares about your ability to solve it’s problems with speed.
There is a reason the C students are most successful in the real world, while the A students generally work for them.
It’s because one figured out how to think and act critically while the other one prioritized and was good at falling in line.
Education doesn’t end when schooling ends. It starts.
Never stop educating yourself.
