You can’t get from social media what you can get from the real thing.
“No social media ‘influencer’ will ever be able to replace an in-person mentor.
You can draw inspiration from the ‘gram if you’d like, but that ain’t the real stuff.
If you want to grow, you have to immerse yourself with those who are living it, not manipulating an algorithm.”
-Ray Zingler on Twitter
I don’t love social media.
“Huh, you’ve posted over 5,500 times and don’t love it?”
No I don’t. Not at all.
What I love is the potential of social media and what it has the ability to create.
What I mean by this is that I don’t use social media to “build my name.” I’m not trying to become “insta-famous”.
If that were the case, I’d adjust my tactics and start posting flashy stuff and lying to people.
My objective on social media is to share unsexy, fundamental truths as they relate to my vocation and my philosophy.
Is my page going to be for everyone? Of course not, but if I’ve learned anything, there is no greater mistake than trying to be all things to all people.
I am looking to connect with people. I mean actually connect with people on a deeper level than just a simple ‘like’ or a ‘keep it up’ DM.
I understand the number of people who are looking for this type of connection are few, but personally speaking, I’d rather have great connectivity with a few than a whole bunch of mindless double taps to appease my ego.
Reason being is that as I’ve grown and continue to grow in my field, I’ve realized how important REAL people are.
I’ve come to understand how important it is to sit down in person and connect. To travel. To visit with people who are leading from the front and excelling in your world.
Those phone calls that you assumed would last 15 minutes, but turn into 90.
Those are the things that actually move the needle in the life of another. My life, included.
Without immersing yourself and getting in the mix with quality people, you’re not getting the full picture. You’re often getting half the story, the highlight ‘reels’ if you will.
You’re not seeing the ugly side. The nitty gritty. The real.
And oftentimes it’s not the sexy stuff that leads people to success. It’s learning how to troubleshoot and grow through the ugly sides people don’t want to post on social.
If you want to grow, immerse yourself. Surround yourself with those who are living it.
You’ll get further, faster, and learn far more in the process.
